Having been born in the early 60's, most of my memories of the racing at the Santa Maria Speedway started in the late 60's and early 70's.   I had the opportunity to meet a lot of the drivers when I was a kid, some of these drivers became some of my favorites over the years.  Bobby Payne's car was just around the corner from where I lived, while Bobby Randolph's was near Fesler Jr. High school.  I remember watching these guys bashing and thrashing on cars during the week getting them ready for some Saturday night action.

My father owned and operated the old wrecking yard on Foster Rd. in Santa Maria and back in those days a lot of racers relied on the wrecking yards for many of their parts.  Other guys I remember from those childhood years were Cliff Vose, Mike Mitchell, Danny Simkins, Frank Freitas, Dave Skaggs, Rick Zeiter, and so many more.

Having the opportunity to put some of this history together brings back some great memories for me, as I hope they do for you.

Ever wonder why cars become rare?
